A Letter From the President

President, Mark Miller

Engagement! That’s the key to the success in the next decade for the Sierra College Foundation. There are so many wonderful things taking place in and around this campus that it’s really difficult not to find some way to connect.

As the new Foundation board president, I take our commitment to raising funds for our students extremely seriously. In the first month of our new term, the board has embraced three new, high-need projects: Computers for Students, Care Packs for Foster Youth, and Smart Classrooms. At our first meeting, teams organized, designated leadership, and started strategizing on how to achieve these short-term goals. In addition, we’re gearing up for a capital campaign that will further assist the college in achieving its goals.

Very generous donations have come though this year, despite our national and local economic woes. We continue to push forward with creative ideas, greater accountability and fast-approaching timelines.

Look for the Foundation Board members to be networking, “connecting the dots,” and making things happen to benefit our students like never before. It’s all about making a good thing even better through getting involved.
Let’s make it happen!

Catherine Morris, Professor and Veterans Counselor, and Michelle Johnson, Professor of English, unite to teach a course that helps returning veterans and their significant others find community in each others’ stories.  The course encompasses informative lectures on student success and all the necessities of English from basic grammar and mechanics to essay writing, which really gives these amazing men and women new tools to transition from military life to academic and civilian life. It also allows them to hear stories of others and begin to confidently craft their own.  The benefits of a learning community such as this move beyond simple learning—it creates lifetime connections and desire to give back to those who so selflessly gave to us.

Sierra College Athletics: A Force to be Reckoned with

The California Community College Commission on Athletics and National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators has ranked the Sierra College athletic program in the top five in the nation for the last six years.  This year we were ranked 3rd overall! This year alone, 11 of our 16 athletic teams finished in the top three of their conference! This year’s Cross Country team was nominated for the CCCAA Scholar Team award.

Athletes who attend Sierra College do so because not only can they fulfill their quest for athletic excellence but academic as well.  Many of our athletes transfer to four-year colleges and of those, many receive either partial or full scholarships.
