Mt. San Antonio College recognized for information system security program
October 2010

Mt. San Antonio College this year became the first California Community College to receive certification from the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) and National Security Agency (NSA) for its computer information systems (CIS) curriculum. The program is now certified for CNSS National Standards 2011 – Information Systems Security (INFOSEC) professionals.

As a result of the certification, students that have completed this program will now have more opportunities for scholarships, internships, and transfers.  “Our students are learning important security related curriculum,” says Mt. SAC CIS professor Jaishri Mehta. “By continuing to focus on these established standards, our students should be well-placed to more readily enter the workforce.”

Lending a hand to the other side of the world
October 2010

While most students were spending summer break relaxing or working to save up for the next school year, students at San Diego Continuing Education’s West City Campus were busy helping others half a world away.  Instructor Donna Namdar’s Intermediate Sewing class made 100 dresses for girls aged 3-12, and donated them to Little Dresses for Africa, a nonprofit organization that distributes clothing to children in Africa.  More than 50,000 dresses have been distributed in 13 countries by the organization.  The Intermediate Sewing course is part of the curriculum for a certificate in Clothing Construction, which prepares students for jobs such as seamstress, alterations expert, tailor, or costume creator.
New program will increase digital literacy broadband access
October 2010

Beginning Fall 2010, California Connects will increase digital literacy and expand broadband Internet access to underserved populations throughout the state. The program will create an online digital literacy program, provide laptop computers to community college Math, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) students who participate in community service, and expand broadband access and promote digital literacy with an emphasis on low-income residents in the Central Valley.  The three-year program will ultimately provide access to more than 61,000 broadband users in California.  The Foundation for California Community Colleges is spearheading this effort in collaboration with the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office, the California STEM Learning Network (CSLNet), the California Community College Technology Center housed at Butte College, and the Great Valley Center affiliated with UC Merced.  The program is funded by a $10.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration for Broadband Technology Opportunities Program.
By The Numbers
October 2010

Nearly 2.9 million students attended a California Community College in 2008-09.
48 percent of the bachelor’s degrees given in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by the University of California are awarded to students that transferred from a California Community College.

Over 60 percent of community college students who transfer to the University of California complete their bachelor’s degree within three years of transfer, a rate comparable to students that entered UC as freshmen.
NSF awards grant to enhance community college engineering education
October 2010

Cañada College has received a National Science Foundation grant to help improve community college engineering programs throughout the state through online technology, with the goal of increasing the number of engineering transfer students coming from California Community Colleges.

The two-year, $150,000 grant will fund the development of two new programs: the Summer Engineering Teaching Institute and the Joint Engineering Program.  The institute will train engineering faculty on developing technology-enhanced instruction and courses.  The Joint Engineering Program will work with the statewide Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement (MESA) program to identify colleges with limited or nonexistent engineering programs and partner with them to design and launch online engineering programs at those schools.
The Outdoor Classroom Project comes to Allan Hancock College
October 2010

Allan Hancock College’s Children’s Center Lab has been designated a demonstration site by the Outdoor Classroom Project.  Funded by the Orfalea Foundation, the Outdoor Classroom Project aims to increase the amount and benefit of outdoor experiences for young children.  As part of their participation the project, the AHC’s Children’s Center has redesigned their playground, which used to be filled with plastic play equipment, to mimic a more natural setting, including a garden, mud pit, and room to run.  More improvements are planned to take place with the Measure I-funded expansion of the Children’s Center, such as a small vineyard, a bike path, and rocks and tree stumps for climbing.  These changes will enhance childrens’ experiences with nature and be more environmentally friendly and affordable to maintain than traditional playground equipment.
Monuments honors the site of former Chihuahuita School
October 2010

This summer, Pasadena City College and the Pasadena Latino Forum unveiled a monument at PCC’s Community Education Center, the former site of the historic Chihuahuita School, which educated Mexican and Mexican-American students from 1916 to 1924, a period of segregation in Pasadena. The site is marked with two plaques, one in English and one in Spanish, set in a large boulder.  Chihuahuita was one of two schools in Pasadena that served the Latino population during this time, and was named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua, where many of the area’s residents were from.
