Theater student's play to be performed at Kennedy Center

MiraCosta College theater student Sassan Saffari (pictured far left) is the recipient of the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival's Award and scholarship for his play "Beacons of Hope." Saffari, a graduate of the college's Actor's Academy, is one of only four undergraduate students nationwide to receive this honor. His play will be performed in concert reading format at the Kennedy Center on January 31 as part of The Presidency of John F. Kennedy: A 50th Anniversary Celebration and simulcast online. The piece blends history and fiction, illustrating a conversation between the late president and his father during a Red Sox - Yankees game, a topic close to Boston-born Saffari's heart.

Community College literary-art magazine wins national honors

The American River Review, a literary-art magazine at American River College, was recently named "Most Outstanding Community College Literary-Art Magazine for 2010" and "First Place with Special Merit" by the American Scholastic Press Association. Also in 2010, the publication was the only community college literary-art magazine to receive a 2010 Gold Crown Award by Columbia Scholastic Press and a Magazine Pacemaker Award from Associated College Press. The magazine is published annually by students in the English department.

California State Professor of the Year Hails from a Community College

Andrew Kindon, an anthropology instructor at West Valley College, was named California State Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Dr. Kindon has been a faculty member at West Valley College since 2004, and during the summer takes students to assist with archaeological research in Central America. "The essence of Dr. Kindon's teaching comes down to inspiration," says West Valley College President Dr. Lori Gaskin. "He inspires his students, he believes in them, and he challenges them to examine the manner in which they interpret the world around them."
Semester-long Study Abroad Program to China Launches at Riverside City College District
January 2011

This March, at least 16 Riverside Community College District students will be heading to Beijing, China, and part of the district's International Education Program. While several community colleges offer two-week long programs in China, Riverside will be the first community college in the nation to offer a semester-long program, which lasts 10 weeks. Students will be immersed in Chinese history and culture while studying political science, philosophy, and the Chinese language.
16-Year-Old Irvine Valley College Student Premiers Original Composition
January 2011

Irvine Valley College student Vartan Simonian's latest musical composition was debuted at IVC's Perspectives Dance Concert this fall accompanied by choreography from world-renowned choreographer Marie de la Palme, an IVC faculty member. Simonian is a computer science major who began attending IVC part-time when he was 12 years old; he is now 16 and expects to graduate with his associate's degree in 2011 and transfer to the University of California, Irvine.
